Dan and Chelsea

The Story

This proposal felt like the final scene of a Chicago-style indie rom-com. Not the sunny, lakefront kind—more like one tucked above a “locals only” dive bar in West Town. The kind of place where your best friend’s band plays at 2AM, the dance floor’s sticky with history, and a vape cloud doubles as stage lighting. And yet—this is where love breaks loose on a weekend night. Where Chelsea hops out of an Uber in a denim jacket chilled by winter air, perfume, and wine.

And this time, Dan says: I’m ready to make you mine.

The Setting — Bourbon on Division

The night unfolded at Bourbon on Division, a two-story bar buried at the edge of Wicker Park. Upstairs? Practically a secret venue only true West Town locals know how to book. Dan had played shows there before with his band, CASA—but this one? This was for Chelsea. I got connected to Dan through a mutual friend in the city’s underground music scene. He wasn’t looking for a photographer—he needed someone to help stage a multimedia moment just before Christmas. A showstopper to end the year.
I was in.

The Setup — Friends in Motion

The plan: rally Chelsea’s closest friends and family—some local, others flying in—without her catching on. Her friends took her out for nails and dinner. Just another girls’ night. Meanwhile, everyone else snuck into Chicago and hid in plain sight. Later, Dan texted casually: “Meet me for a drink?” She walked into Bourbon’s main floor. No Dan. A few strangers. Nothing suspicious. Then: “He’s upstairs.”

The Walk — Lights & Silence

She climbed the stairs. Quiet. Dim lights. A soft trail of candles led her across the floor. Then the silence broke—and faces appeared. Friends. Family. Even the ones who shouldn’t have been able to make it. But they did. And they were here. For her. For them.

The Performance — Dan’s Moment Dan stood onstage, waiting. And then he did what he always does when the lights hit and the crowd is watching: He performed. A song written just for Chelsea—though, as he’d joke later, she helped write it without realizing. Their story, told in melody. A patchwork of their past stitched into the present, aimed toward a shared future. Even Chelsea’s deaf parents followed every beat—Dan hired a professional ASL interpreter to sign the lyrics live on stage.

The Legacy — Not Just a Bar These kinds of rooms—dim, loud, rough around the edges—aren’t just venues. They’re time capsules. Love gets messy here. But it also gets real. This is where a song becomes a story. Where a look across the room becomes the start of a legacy. One day, Dan will point to that upstairs stage and say: “That’s where I proposed to your mother.” And a whole family’s story will begin there, under flickering bar lights—not chandeliers.

The Location

Dan chose Bourbon on Division's upstairs venue for its low-key charm and intimate feel, the kind of space where time slows just enough to notice the little things. It ended up being the perfect setting for something part performance, part heartfelt moment—an atmosphere that matched the tone of the night in every way.

Behind the Lens

The tension backstage was higher strung than most weddings I film. Dan was calm, tuned in, as if he'd already played the moment a hundred times in his head. Sound checks, lighting, and final details all came together fast. The stage took shape quickly—candles lit, interpreter in position, camera angles mapped, the room humming with quiet purpose. We were building a show that had to start right on time—not a second late.

A Defining Moment

It wasn’t the proposal itself that hit hardest. It was the moment before—when Chelsea turned the corner at the top of the stairs and saw what was waiting for her. A room of nearly forty people stood in complete silence, holding their breath, watching her take it all in. That kind of stillness doesn’t happen often—not in a city like this. We had spent the night carefully setting a stage, but this was the moment it became real. The silence meant it worked. It meant it landed.

Then came the music, the verse, the emotion. And in that moment, the room got quiet all over again—just in a different way. The kind of quiet that wraps around you and says, "This is it."
And it was.
